It's here! #NewRelease A Mate's Healing Touch #BlackHillsWolves

Happy release day to me!!

A new family is coming to Los Lobos. Hold onto your hearts because the Burrows siblings are going to take you on a roller coaster ride of love, tears, laughter and (of course) happily ever afters.

The first one to join the pack is Caleb. He's the youngest son and has a way with the dirty talk *fans face*

She has a secret the wrong people know
Hannah Fuentes has graduated Magna Cum Laude from the School of Hard Knocks. Beaten, pregnant and betrayed at seventeen, she has slowly built a life for herself and her daughter Jessie in the small town of Hennessey, South Dakota.

He faces a future he doesn’t want
Caleb Burrows is leaving town. His parents long to return to Los Lobos and pack life, lured by the promise of change under the new Alpha, Drew Tao. The most vivid memories that Caleb and his twin siblings have of pack life are ones of betrayal, pain and horror. They do not remember a time when the pack was at peace.

A chance meeting
Caleb has one final job to complete for the family construction business – the refurbishment of the local diner in Hennessey. He gets more than he bargained for, however. One look, one scent tells him that Hannah, the 'pocket rocket' waitress, is his mate. Caleb is determined that nothing will stop him from claiming her as his own.

The first touch
An explosive encounter lays bare the secrets they have both fought so hard to keep hidden. Caleb must prove he can protect Hannah and her adorable little girl who steals his heart with one look.  Can he persuade her to give up the safe life she has worked so hard for? Her burgeoning relationship with Caleb shows there are untold wonders to be explored in the hands of a man who understands her true worth.

The past will test them
When Hannah’s past rears its ugly head, they must face it side by side. Only united can they save what is most precious to them. Together they will learn that family comes in many guises and there is nothing they won’t sacrifice when one of their own is threatened.

“Whatever you are thinking, son. She’s not for you.” Although low, his tone was determined and forceful.

“I’m not thinking anyth….” The lie fell away as the words soured on his tongue. A change of tack was in order, and he folded his arms across his thick chest. Body language displays were as effective on humans sometimes. “Why wouldn’t she be for me? I don’t see a ring. Is there a husband or a boyfriend?”

When Will shook his head, a flash of anger surged, and Caleb didn’t fight it.

“You think I’m not good enough for your girl, is that it? That I’m some working stiff, only good with his hands. I run the business with my father and my brother. I have prospects, money, a good future any woman would be pleased to share with me.” Snapping his mouth shut, he cut off the embarrassing need to sell his worth to this man. What the hell is wrong with me? That raspberry-and-pepper scent overwhelmed him as she crossed toward the counter. Hannah. He rolled her name around in his head. It suited her.

“No I don’t think you’re good enough for her, but that’s not the goddamn point,” Will snapped before he rubbed the back of his neck and sighed. “Look, Caleb, I’m sure you are a fine young man, and your daddy has a real good reputation with his business. But that girl has been hurt enough to last a lifetime, so I don’t want you messing with her because she’s caught your fancy.”

Caleb stepped back as Will moved in front of him and stepped toward the counter. His hackles rose at the invasion of his space and the clear challenge in the move before he clamped down hard on his instincts. A man had every right to defend his daughter from a relative stranger. The Wolf snarled and snapped in his head, and Caleb gave it a mental swat on the nose. He was the boss, not the Wolf.

The sweet affection she bestowed on Will had him longing for her to turn his way. When she met his gaze, however, only trepidation lit hers. Unable to tear his attention away, he was rewarded with a brief flare as her pupils expanded. She feels it, too. Regardless of what Will said, this woman is most definitely mine. Now to figure out how to get her on the same page or, better still, in the same bed.

#BlackHillsWolves #NewRelease Wolf in Winter Clothing

Join the Black Hills Wolves as they celebrate a year of good fortune, love and rebuilding since Drew became Alpha with authors Melissa Limoges, TL Reeve, Louisa Bacio and series creators Rebecca Royce and Heather Long.

Roland James waited a long time to return to the Black Hills. After Seth, his best friend, left—was driven away—and Seth’s family vanished in the night, he had no reason to stay. Only one purpose remained for him—to build his strength and his skills until he could kill the men responsible for their loss. When word reaches him about Magnum’s demise and Drew’s ascension, he rushes home. Though Drew welcomes him and the town seems to be thriving with a Winter Solstice Run in the offing, Roland can’t celebrate. Not all of his enemies are dead. One—the worst—still lives.

Professor Claudia Donovan has spent a great deal of time and effort to locate one of her colleagues. Then she receives an odd message telling her to meet someone about the woman she’s been trying to find in the middle of nowhere in South Dakota. Taking the first flight and renting a car, she waits at the designated spot. A chance meeting and an even riskier hookup for her TA leaves her with more questions than answers. When she ends up in Los Lobos no one wants to answer her questions.

The last thing Roland expects when he lures the human to the Black Hills is to delight in her scent, her temper, and her cutting tongue. He needs the pawn to distract Ryker because the Enforcer has a weakness. Take away his mate, and Roland can kill him once and for all. Maybe his plan makes Roland the bad guy, but he can live with that. The only problem he has is his need for revenge may cost him Claudia….

About the Author

Heather Long

National bestselling author, Heather Long, likes long walks in the park, science fiction, superheroes, Marines, and men who aren’t douche bags. Her books are filled with heroes and heroines tangled in romance as hot as Texas summertime. From paranormal historical westerns to contemporary military romance, Heather might switch genres, but one thing is true in all of her stories—her characters drive the books. When she’s not wrangling her menagerie of animals, she devotes her time to family and friends she considers family. She believes if you like your heroes so real you could lick the grit off their chest, and your heroines so likable, you’re sure you’ve been friends with women just like them, you’ll enjoy her worlds as much as she does.

Her hands trembled as she pulled a cigarette out and turned away from the wind to get it lit. She was alone standing outside the little coffee shop, huddled as close to the wall as she could. Why the hell did I just decide to fly to the middle of nowhere? Have I lost my damn mind?

Or was she desperate for her last real connection? Shoshanna was great, a fantastic student, a brilliant protégé, and a girl with a bright future, but she wasn’t Saja. Saja had been more than her—

A truck door slammed across the street, and she glanced at the man striding across the winter-slicked road toward the coffee shop. Tall with dark hair, which he wore long and tied into a loose tail at the nape of his neck, he reminded her of a mountain man—except he wore a dress shirt, open suede jacket, and jeans. The mountain-man look from Giorgio. It will be all the rage this season.
His beard, though—damn. She had a thing for bearded men, and he wore his so well. Snow flurries populated the air, and flakes clung to his beard and hair, adding to his rugged appearance. How the hell did he walk so calm and collected through the frigid cold? It didn’t even seem to touch him.

He glanced toward her, and she sucked in a drag off the cigarette even as she jerked her attention away. Staring was rude. Still, she couldn’t help sliding a sideways peek when his booted foot hit the pavement in front of the coffee shop. Her hand trembled when he opened the door and disappeared into the shop. Exhaling the cold with the smoke, she glanced inside. Shoshanna continued to read papers, and a fresh cup of coffee sat waiting for Claudia, along with the untouched second burger.

Mr. GQ Mountain Man took a seat at the counter and raked his fingers through his hair, loosening the tie at his nape. Some of his hair escaped, but the tousled look suited him. The man was the whole package, and he looked damn good from the rear. Nearly as good as he had from the front. The icy air didn’t do a damn thing for the heat unfurling in her blood or the lust coiling in her belly.

After finishing her smoke, she extinguished it and seriously considered a second one. Maybe if she froze to death outside, she wouldn’t go inside and make an idiot out of herself. No sooner did the thought take root than she dismissed it. She’d come for Saja, not to get laid. South Dakota might grow them pretty, but she belonged back in New York.

Find Saja.
Go home.
No getting laid
.

A shudder rolled down her spine, whether from the cold or hot stuff with the beard, she had no idea. Squaring her shoulders, she pulled the door open and charged inside. Priorities.

Yeah, the mental lecture didn’t do a damn thing for her libido. Dear Santa, can I have a hot guy for Christmas? Laughter welled upward, and she chuckled. Shoshanna gave her an owlish blink. Of course, when the idea of writing Santa sounded more sane than hitting on a gorgeous stranger, maybe she had cracked.

“What happened?”

What happened? He inhaled a calming breath and counted to ten, aware that Cemil and Cyrus had joined Sage and were awaiting his answer. Well, not Cemil. He was just being polite. As a telepath, he’d already read Trevor’s thoughts.

“She was determined to come back here and I had to stop her.”

Cemil grinned. “The best you could come up with was decloaking her dead savior right in front of her?”

“Yeah,” he snarled, “it was.” Cassidy stirred in his arms and he tightened his hold keeping her close. He savored the innocent intimacy and hated himself for enjoying it.

Dana stood between the two elevators. “Your room or hers?”

“Hers.”

He nodded toward Sage as he waited for the third elevator, the one reserved for the humans. Somehow, these siblings had charmed the elevators so that only humans could use the one designated to go to the third floor and only Paranormals could use the second floor elevator. The first elevator was reserved for the siblings alone. No one knew where that one went.

“I could use a key to her room.”

“How will you get there?” Sage asked, though he was sure she knew the answer. As always, he would wait patiently, cloaked, for his opportunity.

“Don’t worry about me. Just get me the key. She’s not going to be an easy one to keep an eye on.” The elevator pinged and Dana escorted him to the third floor.

In the privacy of the elevator, he pressed his lips to her hair. She wouldn’t know, but he would remember the silky strands caressing his cheek during the long lonely nights.

He needed to concoct a believable explanation for materializing out of thin air without threatening her sanity. Or his secret.

There's magic in the air...

Kalum Truesdale is willing to take the leap and mate. Fawn Hawthorne has been at his finger tips for months now since his return, but the timid wolf rebuffs him at every turn. With the Winter Solstice right around the corner, he's got a couple of tricks up his sleeves to finally catch the elusive wolf.

Fawn Hawthorne isn't ready for a mate. After years of torture, all she wants is to be left alone. However, the handsome and persistent Kalum Truesdale, isn't willing to let her hide. So, when presents start arriving in the days leading up to the Solstice, Fawn has a decision to make. Take what Kalum is offering her, happiness and love. Or continue to fear the world around her while always wondering, what if?

Excerpt:

“Hello?” The alarm chimed seconds after Kalum called out. His heavy footfalls echoed against her hardwood floors. “Your welcome light is off, sugar.”

His scent filled her workspace. The clean, crisp smell wrapped around her, draping her in its safety. Her mind betrayed her, encouraging her to use him as a security blanket of sorts. “Well you weren’t due here for another half hour so….” She shrugged. Taking another bite of breakfast, she frowned and smacked her lips together. God, she hated oatmeal.

“Right. Sorry. I have a guy I need to meet in Rapid City about a couple head of cattle. Here.” He handed over his information and a small four-by-four box.

“What’s this?” She eyed the plain box suspiciously.

“Don’t know, sug. Why don’t you open it?” Kalum sat in the chair across from her and extended his lean yet muscular legs. The cocky gleam in his eyes along with his relaxed posture unnerved her.

“How about no. Now” —she pushed her bowl away from her—“are you buying today or selling?”

He scratched his chin. The rasp of his scruffy beard sent a shiver down her spine. Kalum stared at her, narrowing his eyes before he shifted and sat up a bit as though contemplating a chess move or a new strategy with which to approach her. The top three buttons on his plaid shirt were open, exposing the white thermal underneath. Why did she feel disappointed at not being able to glimpse his sun-kissed flesh? Or the smattering of coarse chest hair? God, how many nights had she imagined running her fingers through it while wrapped in his embrace? His hands on her body, caressing her.

“Selling,” he said, jolting her out of her thoughts. “The spring brought me five bulls and six heifers. I’ve already got my studs. I don’t need more. As luck has it, this fellow does.”

“Great,” she answered while opening his file on the laptop. “Anything else I should know about before you go?”

“Have dinner with me, Fawn.”

“What?” She blinked and glanced up at him. “Kalum, we can’t. We have a professional relationship. I don’t blur lines.”

“Hmm.” He went back to rubbing his chin. “Well, I hate to do this, but you’re fired, sug.”

Fawn laughed. “We both know you’re not serious, especially after the attempts I’ve made to find you several new accountants.”

“Sugar, I’m dead serious if it means you’ll go out with me.” He leaned forward and tipped his hat up. “You went through all the work of finding replacements because you’re scared. I get it. However, we both know if I let you ship me off—whether because I force your hand by firing you or I take on one of those accountants you found, we’ll both be hurting.”

“You don’t know for sure, Kalum,” she whispered. It already hurt her to see him every day. He was the one thing she desired more than her next breath, but taking a step, making a move—any kind of move—could destroy everything she’d worked so hard on—herself.

“You can’t deny you feel the pull, Fawn. It’s been there since I moved home. We’ve been doing this Texas two-step around each other for a while now. Don’t you think we owe it to each other to try a cha-cha instead?”

#NewRelease! Disquieted Souls by Deena Remiel a new #BlackHillsWolves Novel from @DecadentPub

DISQUIETED SOULS, a BLACK HILLS WOLVES NOVEL, #29 By Deena Remiel

BUY NOW!

Willow Bissett, a fashion photographer, has had enough of the career that’s blackened her soul, and wants out. Her passion lies in taking pictures of nature, and she’s determined to make a living from doing it. When she stumbles upon a gruesome scene in the Black Hills Forest, her life is forever changed.

Greyson shouldn't be alive. As the runt of the litter, his mother left him to die in the wilderness. Picked up by Drew, son of the Alpha, he is adopted into the Tao Pack. Rather than living a charmed life, he lives his days alone, tormented by his abandonment and his unique appearance. His soul yearns for acceptance, peace, and closure.

Willow could be the answer to Greyson’s prayers, or the very death of him.

EXCERPT:

“Are you a fugitive from the law?”

He bared a perfect set of pearly white teeth any mother would be proud of and chuckled. “No. And I’ve never been arrested, either. You can relax.”

“So,” she pressed on, breathing easier once again, “you have a thing against the medical profession?”

He turned his face toward her, and she could now confirm his eyes, one rich amber with golden flecks, the other the deepest blue, were as beguiling as she’d figured. “You could say I’m a fast healer. I’ll be fine in a couple of days…Willow.”

When he spoke her name, it was as though he’d spread a coat of silky chocolate over her entire body and licked every ounce of it off with his tongue. Her palms tingled, her face flushed, and she shifted in her seat to ease the growing ache down low.

“Fast is one thing, but you’d need to be supernatural to bounce back from these wounds in a couple of days. Insert foot in mouth, Will.” She groaned and dropped her head into her hands.

“What do you mean?” His voice returned to a shaky whisper, but she heard him just fine.

She shrugged off her embarrassment and peered up at him. Enough dancing around the issue. She needed answers now that he was conscious and looking all delicious despite his injuries. So, she ignored his question and asked the first of many of her own. “Who are you?”

“My name is Greyson. Thanks for fixing me up. I’m sure you did an awesome job.”

“You’re welcome. I’m no doctor, but I make a damn good triage nurse in the wilderness when I need to. Back to you, Greyson. What the hell are you? And what actually happened out there? I can only guess, but I want the whole story. From the beginning. I don’t think it’s too much to ask…considering.”

“What if it is?”

“What if it is what?”

“Too much to ask.”

The muse is skittish in this one

Monday morning again! Weekends are too short and I feel for all those of you who will have to drag themselves to EDJ's today. I have lots of chores this week so I think it's time to get a proper schedule in place because the days are passing and I'm not really achieving as much as I would like.

No-one to blame for this except for me and my skittish muse. For the first time my thoughts just can't seem to settle on one story. I'm struggling with my focus and in trying to corral myself into one story or the other, I'm actually not getting very far with either of them.

So I've decided that it's time to write whichever one is at the forefront of my mind and when the other one starts to clamour for attention I will switch over. Not sure how it's going to work out but forward momentum is better than inertia.

Wish me luck because I need some words this week and I would really like to get some consistency in my word count as lurching from 500 to 4500 to nothing for a couple of days is starting to stress me out.

Even if I can't discipline the muse, I can discipline myself so I'm committing here and now to 2000 a day every day between now and Friday. Not a huge target to some but by setting an achievable target for myself then I am more likely to succeed.

On that note - we are approaching NaNoWriMo and if you have never tried it before I would recommend it as a way of training yourself to write regularly. The more often I write, the easier it is to maintain. A word of warning though - if you become de-motivated by missing targets then it might not be for you.

The graph on your dashboard is based on achieving 50,000 in 30 days. If you know in your heart that is too much for you then maybe set your own level and create a spreadsheet to track your own achievements. I know more than one person who has become disillusioned if they miss there target as it doesn't take long for it to stretch away from you. 300 words a day would give you 9000 at the end of the month that's either a great short story or a strong foundation for something longer.

Set yourself up to succeed not fail.

It's also the time of year when there is a lot of advice floating around. There is no right or wrong way to write. Some are early risers, some are night owls. Some are slow and steady builders others are gripped by the madness of the muse and the words pour forth. Most of us are a bit of all of these things - whichever you are it's the right way to be - for you.

It's your process.

“You think I’m not good enough for your girl, is that it? That I’m some working stiff, only good with his hands. I run the business with my father and my brother. I have prospects, money, a good future any woman would be pleased to share with me.” Snapping his mouth shut abruptly, he cut of the embarrassing need to sell his worth to this man. What the hell is wrong with me? That raspberry-and-pepper scent overwhelmed him suddenly as she crossed toward the counter. Hannah. He rolled her name around in his head. It suited her.

“No I don’t think you’re good enough for her, but that’s not the goddamn point,” Will snapped before he rubbed the back of his neck and sighed. “Look, Caleb, I’m sure you are a fine young man and your daddy has a real good reputation with his business but that girl has been hurt enough to last a lifetime so I don’t want you messing with her because she’s caught your fancy.”

He stepped back as Will moved in front of him and stepped toward the counter. His hackles rose at the invasion of his space and the clear challenge in the move before he clamped down hard on his instincts. A man had every right to defend his daughter from a relative stranger. The Wolf snarled and snapped in his head and Caleb gave it a mental swat on the nose. He was the boss, not the Wolf. The look of sweet affection she bestowed on Will had him longing for her to turn his way.

When she met his gaze however, only trepidation lit her gaze. Unable to tear his eyes away, he was rewarded with a brief flare as her pupil expanded. She feels it, too. Regardless of what Will said, this woman is most definitely mine.

Now to figure out how to get them both on the same page or better still, in the same bed.

A day in the life of a writer

Lots of people want to know the secret to being a writer. Lots of people say "I'd love to be a writer, but..." There is a myth and a mystique around writing but as someone who is fairly new to this game let me share something with you - it's just like any other job only you don't have to get dressed or leave the house.

I'm starting a new project. I've written the outline and I pretty much have the path from A to B mapped out. It takes me a while to break into a story, takes a while for the characters to share themselves with me so the first few days are hard. I fiddle around with a first chapter, I tinker and type and try to get inside the lead characters heads. Some days it works, today it doesn't.

When I worked in an office I had days like this. Days when I really couldn't get motivated, days when I would do anything other than the thing I was supposed to be doing and that's why I say writing is just like any other job. And just like any other job, if I don't work then I won't get paid which is why I am sitting at my desk grinding just a few more words out. Just another couple of sentences, maybe even a paragraph.

Even if these words don't end up in the final draft they will be worth it because I have a thousand and twenty seven words to build from. I have a thousand and twenty seven words to edit, to tinker around with while I wait for the story to gain some momentum.

It's not been a great day so far, but I'll take it. The cupboards and the fridge are stocked for the week, the washing machine is churning away, I've sent the emails I needed to. I've finished the book I was reading, I've had a soak in the bath. I've also dropped my phone and fallen off my chair while trying to pick it up off the floor so now I have a bruise on my butt. Shit happens.

Not a great day, not the worst day but I still have a thousand and twenty seven words and that's more than I had when I woke up this morning - could've done without the bruise though :)

Excerpt:

Fiona dropped her fork. How could her soul have picked him for her mate? The Fates played cruel jokes, and, once again, they did so at her expense. “The vetter was trying her best.”

“Her best to do what?” He gripped her arm a bit tighter.

“To be a vetter.” By the Goddess, she’d tried so hard. Her failure had cost an innocent woman her life.

He rubbed his hand along her arm, his face breaking into a smile again. “You know, I believe you’re right.”

A fat lot of good that did for Lizbet. She dropped her gaze to his hand. “Why are you always touching me?” She didn’t know him well enough to warrant the constant contact, but pleasure sizzled under her skin at his touch. She didn’t deserve to enjoy anything.

He smiled wider. “I can’t stop myself. You feel the connection, don’t you?”

She couldn’t have a connection to a man who scorned people who didn’t use their powers for the greater good, not when she’d built the foundation of her life on denying her true powers. “I’m actually not a tactile person.”

After speaking such a big lie, she couldn’t continue to look him in the eye, not with all her powers concentrated in the most intimate tactile experience possible.

His grin split wider. “I’d love the chance to prove you wrong.”

And when he did, she’d know his thoughts. She’d know how much he despised the woman who claimed to be a vetter and allowed the commander’s beloved daughter to lifebond with a man who would murder her. Fiona had come to the Wiccan Haus to get away from the public’s hatred and scorn, not see it behind Armando’s beautiful smile and feel it no matter how warm and gentle his hands.

She shoved away from the table and ran for the exit.

“I didn’t mean to offend you. I meant it as a compliment,” he called after her.

The dining room quieted around her. Everyone stared. Once again, she drew the bad kind of attention. But she couldn’t stop.

Despite her desire to be a simple vetter, without real vetting powers that life could only be a lie. The truth, however, was far worse than a life of lies.

Write this picture Sept 2015 - Crossroads

A wonderful author and friend of mine, Kayleigh Malcolm created a fun writing challenge last month called "Write this picture". A fairly simple premise, an image will be posted and anyone wishing to participate has to write a scene about anything that the picture inspired. The hard bit - you only get 250 words.

I skipped last month because we were just a little preoccupied with the relocation to Belgium but no excuses this time so here is my September effort. I will post links to other writers who participate as I get them so I'll update this post over the next week.

It’s in you, my dear. The spark, the secret, the truth. Your mother couldn't face it but I hope you will come to embrace your destiny….

Amelia’s hand convulsed, scrunching the letter from her grandmother between stiff fingers as she stared at the intricately carved wooden box. The executor had handed it to her that morning, together with an envelope.

The loss of the two most important women in her life lay heavy on her heart as she lit a vanilla candle in remembrance to them. The sweet scent curled through the air, the familiar fragrance a source of comfort; of focus.

Drawing a deep breath, she flipped the lid and carefully placed the contents of the box on the table. A pack of cards, a collection of crystals and rune stones. The final object was wrapped in a silken cloth. Handling it carefully, her actions somewhere between a child cherishing their last Christmas present and a soldier handling unexploded ordinance, she drew back the material and revealed the crystal ball.

Her grandmother’s most treasured possession.

The weight of it surprised her as did the way the smooth glass warmed in her hand. Holding it up to the light, she smiled at the altered perspective it gave as she twisted her wrist this way and that.

The surface rippled, darkened, as a cloud of grey smoke turned the clear ball opaque. The spark, the secret... soft words whispered in her ear.

To look or not to look. Time to choose.

So, tell me what you think. What does the picture inspire in you? The wonderful thing about this exercise is that the image will speak to each writer in a totally different way. That's what makes us unique; and special.

Under A Mating Moon by Celia Breslin

Black Hills Wolves - Book 27

Blurb

British Alpha wolf Jake Marsden spends his days among humans, pursuing a lucrative music career and avoiding his pack’s politics. When his current DJ tour takes him to the US, he stops in Los Lobos to visit family, and runs into the one Wolf he never wants to see again—the mate who rejected his claim.

While visiting her brother in Los Lobos, free-spirited Lexi Luparell is shocked to encounter the Wolf she’d denied when they were teens. Now she must face her guilt for the cruel way she spurned him all those years ago, make amends, and admit the truth. Jake was right all along—they’re meant to mate.

Lexi would love to explore the mate concept and her overwhelming attraction to virile, alpha Wolf Jake, but he wants nothing to do with her. How can she break down his defenses when she’s the reason he built them in the first place?

Jake dates only human women now. Lexi had her shot at being his mate, and she threw it away. But when her life is threatened, he may have to rethink his position and do whatever it takes to claim his one true mate.

Excerpt

A billion butterflies battered Lexi's stomach. She shifted her attention from Ross to the piano. Sure enough, the music had stopped, and Jake faced her from his seat on the bench. Man oh man, the heavy stare from those sky blue eyes sent shivers skittering down her spine. His gaze held the same intensity she remembered from him as a kid, as if he saw into the heart of people, exposing their deepest secrets. It had driven her crazy back then, and she'd spent much time teasing him, pulling his hair, trying to distract him from being so serious all of the damn time. They were teenagers—partying was supposed to be their sole focus.

Jake said something to his uncle then stalked straight at her, cutting a path right through the middle of the tables and the many, too-curious patrons.

          A whimper escaped her throat.

Surprise sparked in her brother’s brown eyes. "You're kidding me. Him?" He burst out laughing. "Wow, sis, that's some major, big-time irony right there."

Darci’s expression conveyed her bewilderment. "Now what are you two talking about?"

Her annoying brother grinned. "See that angry Alpha headed our way? My sister here rejected him when they were teens and he's apparently her—"

Lexi socked her brother in the ribs. "Shut it, Ross."

"Ouch." Ross rubbed his side and chuckled at her plight. The jerk. "Come on, Lexi, you have to admit the hilarity of the situation."

No, she did not. Nor did she have to admit that J-Bird was right all those years ago. He was her mate. O to the M to the G…. They were mates.

Even so, he didn't look happy to see her at all. In fact, he looked positively enraged. Shit, shit and triple shit. What a mess she'd made eight years ago. Well, she was woman enough to pull on her big-girl panties and fix it. She straightened her spine and lifted her chin in challenge, meeting Jake's stormy stare. He halted before her.

I can do this. "Hey J-Bird. Nice to see you." Lovely. Her voice sounded like she'd eaten the gravel from the lot in front of Gee's bar. Embarrassment heated her cheeks.

One breath, two breaths, three…. J-Bird glared. Tension coiled between them in the silence. Lexi bit the inside of her cheek to avoid babbling at him. She'd said hello. It was his turn. Damn it, J-Bird, say something. He wasn't making this easy.

"Alexina."  His arctic tone dismissed her and slapped her in the face at the same time, leaving her disappointed and confused. No one called her by her full name. No one except her parents when she'd done something wrong as a kid. He might as well have said, "Screw you," while slamming a door in her face.

His focus shifted to her brother. "Hello, Ross. Been a while." His hand shot out to grasp her brother's in a cordial shake.

"Good to see you, Jake. Join us for lunch? My treat. We can catch up on old times."

"No, thank you. I'm done. Nice to see you again, Ross." Jake nodded at Darci. "Miss." He brushed past them and out the door.

"What. Just. Happened?" The, “I'm done,” he uttered in his delicious British accent seemed aimed more at her than at her brother's offer. And the fact he hadn't even looked at her before stalking out all sexy in his gloom and doom? Yeah, that hurt.

"I think you know, sis." The amusement left her brother's face and sympathy glimmered in his gaze. "Question is, what are you going to do about it?"

She'd never run from a fight in her life. She wouldn't start now. "Grab a table. I'll be back in a second. Or not." She ignored her brother's knowing grin and hurried out the door.

With his ice-blue stare locked on her, Jake rose to his feet, all taut muscle and predatory power. His energy swept over her like a tsunami, forcing all of the moisture to abandon her mouth while parts much lower wept with want. Her inner Wolf howled, answering the call of this Alpha, the first Dominant male ever to make her sit up and take notice. Holy crap. Her muscles shook with the need to bound over to him, jump in his arms, wrap her legs around his torso and writhe against his hard, hot, tattooed body.
